WORKSHOP ON SELF-SERVICE BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE TOOLS IN MS EXCEL – 2DAYS

SSBI2D

BACKGROUND

WHAT IS BI ?

Business intelligence (BI) is a technology-driven process for gathering, organising and analyzing data and presenting actionable information to help corporate executives, business managers and other end users make more informed business decisions.
The general process of business intelligence is as follows:

  • Gathering data that is scattered across different information systems (or even on-line)
  • Organizing it through a data model
  • Turning it into meaningful information through analysis
  • Making actionable decisions aimed at fulfilling a strategic goal

While BI serves as a backbone for making informed decisions, most BI tools and technologies require massive investments (usually upwards of a million USD) and substantial deployment time (about 8-12 months). Also, there remain significant uncertainties on their use by end users because of end users’ non-technical background and unfamiliarity with these tools.

WHAT IS SELF-SERVICE BI ?

Self-service BI is a form of business intelligence in which end users are empowered to independently satisfy their own information needs. With self-service BI, non-technical professionals can generate their own reports, run their own queries, and conduct their own analyses, without the assistance of IT staff.

There are many benefits that can be derived through the implementation of a self-service BI system. Functional workers can make faster, better decisions because they no longer have to wait during long reporting backlogs. At the same time, technical teams will be freed from the burden of satisfying end user report requests, so they can focus their efforts on more strategic IT initiatives.

MS EXCEL AS A SELF-SERVICE BI TOOL ?

Microsoft has made a smart move my making available Power Pivot, Power Query, Power View and Power Maps (for FREE!!) in our favourite desktop spreadsheet software MS Excel (see version specification below in “Most important requisite”), thus empowering the end-user to harness value from BI at a fraction of costs and deployment time.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

This workshop is designed with an objective to introduce participants to Self-Service BI and give them a hands-on experience on Power Pivot, Power Query, Power View and Power Maps so that they can appreciate how Excel, voted the best ‘Self-Service BI Tool’, can help them to meet their information requirements.

Upon completion of workshop, participants shall be able to:

  • Import millions of rows of data, from multiple data sources, into a single Excel workbook,
  • Create relationships between heterogeneous data,
  • Create calculated columns and measures using formulas,
  • Build PivotTables and
  • Create amazing power view reports and then
  • Further analyze the data so that they can make timely business decisions without requiring IT assistance.

WHO SHOULD ENROLL
